Identify the holding before valuing it
A valuation needs the metal, net metal weight and fineness together. Entering a gram quantity as kilograms or ounces changes the result dramatically. Here, an ounce means a troy ounce of 31.1034768 grams. For jewellery, exclude stones and non-metal fittings from the weight. If their contribution is unknown, the result is not a reliable calculation of fine-metal content.
A ten-gram .995 gold example
Assume an illustrative fine-gram reference of 100. A ten-gram .995 product contains 10 × .995 = 9.95 fine grams. Its metal reference is 9.95 × 100 = 995. The price of 100 is an example, not a live quote. If documentation states weight as fine grams already, do not apply fineness again. Gross weight and contained fine metal describe different quantities.
Separate reference value from net resale
Suppose a dealer bids 97 per gross gram for that exact ten-gram product. Gross proceeds are 970. With an illustrative 1% charge and a fixed fee of 5, net proceeds are 970 − 9.70 − 5 = 955.30. An item-specific bid already accounts for that item’s fineness; multiplying 970 by .995 again would understate it. Enter an actual matched product bid in the resale fields. The fee field takes a total amount: enter 9.70 + 5 = 14.70 here, not a percentage.
Read the cost comparison carefully
If total acquisition cost was 1,020, the reference comparison is −25, while the example net-resale comparison is −64.70. These are different measures. A reference-value change is not a realized gain or loss. The final result depends on an executed sale and actual charges. An old dealer bid does not establish what a dealer will pay today.
Several products need separate inputs
Do not value a .995 gold bar, 22-karat jewellery and .925 silver using one purity setting. Use the metals portfolio to give each holding its own metal, unit and fineness. Its total combines fine-metal references; it is not one executable buyback offer for all the products. Each item can have different fees and acceptance terms.
Check before using the result
Read the source timestamp and FX date. Non-USD references use daily currency conversion, not a bank’s current executable bid or ask. A delayed observation should not be treated as a current offer. Confirm documentation, quoted units, fee basis and settlement timing. This calculator does not test authenticity or fineness; it calculates from the information entered.
