What moves gold and silver?

Clear units, calculations and sources.

Read interest rates, the dollar, investment flows and industrial demand together, including why the same headline can have different effects.

Start with more than one explanation

A gold headline focused only on inflation, or a silver headline focused only on solar demand, leaves out much of the market. The World Gold Council connects currencies, interest rates, growth, risk, investment flows and supply. The Silver Institute separates industrial use from investment demand. These frameworks identify evidence to inspect; they do not establish the cause of a particular daily move.

The expected path matters as much as the decision

Gold does not pay regular interest. Changes in the appeal of interest-bearing assets can therefore alter its opportunity cost. A policy rate, a bond yield and an inflation-adjusted yield are different measures. A widely expected rate cut may provide little new information when announced. Compare prior expectations with the decision and subsequent guidance before drawing a conclusion from the headline.

The dollar relationship is conditional

A dollar-denominated metal has two moving parts for an investor using another currency: the metal price and the exchange rate. Dollar strength can raise the cost for some buyers without guaranteeing a gold decline. Risk demand or investment flows can offset other influences. Gold and the dollar rising together does not mean either series is wrong. Compare consistent intervals and currencies.

Silver has a second demand channel

Silver is used in electronics, energy and other industrial applications. Output and metal consumption need not grow one-for-one. The Silver Institute’s 2026 survey describes how thrifting and substitution in solar cells constrained demand. More panels can be manufactured with less silver per panel. Inspect metal intensity, inventories and investment demand alongside the technology headline.

From a risk headline to an executable quote

An initial response to a geopolitical event can differ from the equilibrium several days later. Liquidity needs, position changes and dealer terms also matter. If spot gold rises while a dealer widens its bid spread, net resale proceeds may rise less. Assessing a headline and measuring the cost of a transaction after it are separate tasks.

Build a repeatable reading checklist

Record the observation time first. Compare the metal, exchange rate and relevant yield measures over the same interval. Distinguish an observed data release from a forecast or expectation. Finally obtain current bid and ask terms for the same product and quantity. Agreement among indicators does not make the outcome certain; this checklist does not generate a price target.
