Euro reference, several retail markets
The euro-area page expresses gold in EUR; it does not present a single Europe-wide retail price. The same fine-metal reference can sit underneath different products, delivery charges and dealer margins. A retail offer in another currency should first be converted on a consistent basis. Do not compare an EUR price per gram directly with a USD price per ounce simply because both are labelled gold.
Comparing bars of different sizes
For two gold bars with the same purity, compare the total delivered price per fine gram. A 100-gram bar and ten 10-gram bars contain the same gross weight, but their fabrication and distribution costs can differ. Multiply weight by the stated purity before calculating the fine-metal reference. An apparent discount based only on gross grams can disappear when purity or additional fees are included.
Worked currency conversion
This example assumes gold at USD 3,100 per troy ounce and a conversion of 1 USD = 0.9 EUR. These are illustrative inputs, not current prices or exchange rates. The fine-gram result is 3,100 × 0.9 / 31.1034768 = 89.7006 EUR. Multiply by fine grams to value a holding; add actual fees to compare a purchase.
Before comparing an offer
- Confirm the currency code and whether the quote is per gram, troy ounce or kilogram.
- Establish whether quantity describes gross weight or fine-metal content.
- Request the dealer’s buy and sell quotes separately, including delivery and total fees.
- Match timestamps; daily FX conversions and a live USD chart can describe different observations.
